When Life Isn't Perfect: Thankfulness In The Middle Of It All
Life isn’t always picture-perfect—and thankfully, God doesn’t ask it to be. A little reminder that His goodness is still there in the hard days, the happy days, and all the beautifully messy moments in between. Thankfulness is easy when you know God is with you.
Living Life Thankful

Some days, thankfulness comes pretty easily. The sun is shining, the coffee tastes divine, you just had a great laugh, and you think to yourself, “This is the best day ever. Thank You, Jesus!”
And then there are the other days that make you want to say, “Wah-wahhhhh!” 😩
It’s cold. The coffee spills. The plans fall apart. Someone is having some issues and suddenly, being thankful requires a little more intention.
But maybe that’s exactly why God tells us:
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Notice it says in all circumstances—not for every circumstance.
We don’t have to pretend everything is wonderful. Instead, we can choose to remember that God is still wonderful in the middle of everything.
So here’s a little THANKFULNESS reminder for those days when our hearts need a reset:
T — Trust God even when I don’t understand.
H — Hope in Christ instead of my circumstances.
A — Acknowledge God as the source of every good thing.
N — Notice His goodness in the little things.
K — Know Him more deeply and remember who He is.
F — Faithfulness — remember how faithful He’s already been.
U — Unshaken — let gratitude steady my heart.
L — Look for God’s hand instead of only looking at what’s wrong.
N — Nearness — remember God is right here with me.
E — Enough — remind my heart that Jesus is enough.
S — Surrender what I can’t control and trust the One who can.
S — See my life through the lens of God’s goodness.
Thankfulness doesn’t mean ignoring the hard stuff. It means refusing to let the hard stuff become all we can see.
Because when we start looking for God’s goodness, it’s amazing how often we find it—in an unexpected smile, an answered prayer, a beautiful sunset, a chirping bird, a quiet morning, or an evening stroll.
Sometimes God’s goodness is found in the big, obvious blessings. Other times, it’s tucked into the small moments—the ones we might have missed if we weren’t looking.
Thankfulness doesn’t require perfect circumstances. It comes from recognizing a perfect and faithful God right in the middle of them.
So, if today is one of those “wah-wahhhhh” kind of days, take a breath. Pause. Look around. And ask yourself:
“Where can I see God’s goodness right now?”
Maybe it’s something tiny. Maybe it’s something you’ve taken for granted. Maybe it’s simply the reminder that you are not walking through this day alone.
God is still good.
God is still faithful.
God is still near.
And there is always something worth thanking Him for.
Keep your eyes open. Keep your heart soft. And look for the little gifts of grace God is placing along your path today.
You may be surprised by how much beauty you find when you start looking through grateful eyes.
Jesus, thank You. Thank You for the good days and even for the days that are hard. Thank You for the things I understand and the things I don’t. When life feels messy or frustrating, help me slow down and remember that You are still with me. Open my eyes to the little blessings I might otherwise miss, and help me trust You with the things I can’t change.
Today, I just want to have a grateful heart. Not because everything is perfect, but because You are good, You are faithful, and You are always with me. Amen. ❤️
